Tips for Better Service

Machine Instructions:

How do I use the machine properly?
Plug your machine in overnight to completely recharge the battery.
How do I let the staff know about problems with the machine?
Call us to get a replacement. If your machine is not working properly, have someone write the problem on the form on the front of the Styrofoam box so we may tell the repairmen what is wrong with the machine.
May I clean the machine or replace the batteries myself?
Clean machines lightly with soap and water. The batteries are a special type of battery. When the machine will not hold a charge, send the machine back to us and we will replace the battery.
What do I do when the cassette sounds like it's dragging?
Plug the machine into the wall. The battery could be weak. Recharge the battery overnight.
What if the voices sound like chipmunks?
Be sure to check to make sure the speed selector is set to the left side of the toggle switch (15/16). Also make sure the variable speed switch is all the way over to the left. If both of these are correct, take the tape out of the machine and tap it on the table to loosen the tape.

Service to individuals:

How long does it take to get the service started?
Generally, it takes 3 business days after we have verified that you have a complete application. We ship a new patron packet with lots of useful information, a machine, catalogs, and five books to get you started.
How can I look up a book to see if it has been recorded?
Go to www.klas.com/glass and search the Georgia catalog. Or go the National Library Service catalog at http://nlscatalog.loc.gov.
How can I send in requests?
You may contact us or request them online at www.klas.com/glass if you have a user id and password. You may fax an order to 706-236-4631. You may call us Mon-Fri 8:30 - 4:30 toll free in Georgia at 1-888-263-0769 or 1-706-236-4618 or leave requests on our answering machine.
I'm not getting the kind of books I would like to receive, what can I do?
Update your records on the Georgia (GLASS) Catalog website or call us. We'll be happy to review your records. We can add authors, exclude authors, exclude male or female narrators, exclude subjects, exclude content (violence, strong language or sex), or add favorite subjects or series. The system is very flexible.
What if I'd like to change the way I receive books?
You may have us choose the titles based on subjects that you ask to receive or you may choose the authors, series, or titles. Just let us know! You may check out up to 50 items at a time for 30 days without receiving a recall notice. Tell us how many books you want to have checked out but remember these go back and forth through the mail, so allow for that. You can change the number at any time. If you need to hold you books for a while, call us. We can do that too!
What if I'm moving out of your service area? How do I get my service transferred?
Just call us to let us know the new address and phone number. We will let you know who will be serving you in the future. We will transfer all the necessary paperwork to the gaining library. You keep your machine and books until you are finished with them. Return the books back to the address on the card in the book. The machine can go back to the new library for repairs or when you discontinue service.
What if I'm moving but remain in your service area?
Call us with the new phone number and address. We'll forward your mail to the new address.

Service to schools:

I'm not sure if our school is enrolled in the service, what can I do?
Call us. Each fall teachers need to update their information with us. Teachers move, students move, schools even change addresses and phone numbers. We would love to have email addresses for the teachers using our service.
What do you require to start a school account?
An application for institutions which must be signed by the school administrator (usually the principal), a list of active and certified eligible students, their reading level, and particular interest, certification forms or individual student applications showing that the student is eligible for service, the number of machines and other adaptive equipment required, and how you would like to be served is important for us to know.
I teach a several schools, can I just have one account for all?
It is best to have an account at each school. We can send the equipment and books to that school so it will be there in your mailbox when you arrive. It also helps us to keep track of inventory. If a machine breaks, call or email us, return it in the box it came in, we'll ship a replacement machine the next day.
I have two teachers at the same school that have students which need a machine, how can we set this up?
I recommend having an account for each teacher at that school. We put it to the attention of that teacher so the materials come directly to them.
I see on the catalog that materials might be available from the Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic, how do I get these materials?
I recommend that the school apply for an institutional membership at the RFB&D. If you need an occasional book from them, our library can order it and ship it through us to you.
What do I do at the end of the school year?
Please return all books and materials so we can clear the account and refurbish the machines. It helps to start fresh at the beginning of each school year.
